Daytime temperatures here sit in the mid to high sixties through most of the winter. Nights drop into the forties. It rains, mostly in January and February, in bursts rather than for days at a stretch. The sun comes back quickly.

That is not Palm Springs. Nobody is swimming in January. What you get instead is a coastline you can walk every single day in a fleece, a town that is quiet because the summer crowds are gone, and light that photographers drive a long way for.

Why the Central Coast instead of the desert

The usual snowbird destinations are hot and dry, which suits some people and wears on others. The California coast offers a different proposition: mild rather than hot, green rather than beige, and walkable in a way that sprawling desert developments generally are not.

The bluffs trail and the salt marsh nature park are both walkable from the property. The harbor seal rookery is active from December through May, which is exactly the window most winter guests are here. There is a farmers market, a decent number of good restaurants for a town this size, and enough day trips within an hour to keep several months interesting.
